Zeroing In: How to Buy an Electric Truck

Government support is making the switch to electric commercial vehicles more affordable than ever. In the latest Zeroing In video, Roger Clarke, Head of Electromobility, and Elwyn Thompson, Network Truck and LCV Sales Manager, talk us through the process of buying an electric truck, from the first conversation to funding models.

Government Support for Electric Trucks and Vans

As Ellwyn highlights, the UK's Zero Emission Van Grant and Zero Emission Truck Grant can significantly reduce the upfront cost of purchasing eligible electric commercial vehicles.

Available support includes:

  • Up to £5,000 towards qualifying electric vans

  • Up to £81,000 towards qualifying electric trucks, depending on vehicle weight

  • Up to 70% funding towards eligible depot charging infrastructure

These grants are helping more businesses make the transition from diesel to electric.

Beyond the Purchase Price

Ellwyn explains how the upfront cost is only part of the overall picture.

The real comparison is the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which considers the cost of owning and operating the vehicle over its lifetime, including purchase price, maintenance, energy costs and taxation.

Electric trucks can offer:

  • Lower repair and maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts

  • Lower and more predictable energy costs with depot charging

  • Zero Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax)

For many operators, these savings help narrow the cost difference over the life of the vehicle, with some already achieving TCO parity.

Flexible Finance and Charging Solutions

Next to how they’re funded. Ellwyn explains that electric trucks can now be funded through finance options, including Hire Purchase, Finance Lease, Operating Lease and Contract Hire.

Charging infrastructure is equally as important. With government support available for depot charging and specialist partners to help plan installation, businesses can develop a charging solution that suits their operation.

Battery Confidence

Finally, Ellwyn talks us through how battery performance is a key consideration for any electric fleet. Renault Trucks supports customers with battery performance guarantees and connected services that monitor battery health throughout the vehicle's working life, helping operators maximise performance and confidence.

Start Your Electric Journey

Roger wraps up by highlighting that Renault Trucks E-Tech vehicles are already operating successfully across the UK in a wide range of real-world operations. Combined with government grants, lower running costs and flexible funding options, they are becoming an increasingly practical choice for many fleet operators.

If you're considering making the switch, Renault Trucks can help you understand your options.

EV Discovery Programme

For many operators, one of the biggest barriers to electrification isn't cost or ambition, it’s simply never having the chance to try an electric vehicle in real-world operations. That's the exact problem the Vertellus EV Discovery Programme is designed to solve.
